Did you see the Time article "The 10 Most Endangered Newspapers in America"?

Number five is the Boston Globe.

Wow, I can't picture a world without the Globe.

Wow.

So looking at those papers and their figured values. If you were able to swoop in with say $250M or so it looks like you could remake the countries' journalistic landscape.

You know, I was wondering what to do with that spare quarter of a billion dollars ...

So that got me to thinking, how much is the Portland Press Herald worth?

In 1998 The Seattle Times Co. bought the Press Herald, the Kennebec Journal, the (Waterville) Morning Sentinel, the (Bath) Coastal Journal, the (Portland) Maine Switch, and MaineToday.com for an estimated $200 million.

Oh, that also included the domain name portland.com, which they then sold off in May of 2004. Can't find out how much they got for that.

In March of last year the president and chief executive officer of Blethen Maine Newspapers, Charles C. Cochrane, said Seattle folks would be "lucky if they get half of what they paid for it".

And that was before the collapse of the world economy.

So I bet it ain't worth much these days ...
